The LI has a scholarship program called the Leadership Advancement Scholar, or more commonly, LAS. Through LAS I have had the opportunity to meet many different people and have met some of my best friends for life. They also provide many different opportunities for students that most of the general student body does not have access to or know about. I also have more a support system than the typical college kid does. The LI staff truly cares about all their students and is willing to help in any way they can. Dan and Jesi, especially, have helped to make the transition to college an easy one for everyone.
Everyone in LAS is required to follow a specific protocol that sounds horrible, but is really very easy and is put in place to ensure that you, as a student, get involved on campus and you use your leadership qualities to their full capacity. The protocol also calls for the 40 scholarship winners to take specific classes together that are harder than the normal introduction classes that most freshman take. For example, instead of taking COM 101, intro to communications, LASer’s take COM 267L, intro to debate, which is a class that is useful in any major or minor. Through the protocol, LAS students are put on the path to receive a leadership minor, something that most students don’t even know is a possibility.
