Just like the typical farm girl (that I kinda am), I only know Detroit for what I have heard about it. I have been in Detroit multiple times, but only for things like Red Wings or Tigers games, so I really didn’t have any time to just stop and look around. The main issues that I know about are the ones that I hear on the news (when I watch to it) or from other people. These include a lot of crime, poor education, a lot of vacant land and a need for new growth in the area.
This project fits hand in hand with the Leadership Institute here at Central. Its purpose and vision (found below) both focus on how to teach people to become better leaders for today and tomorrow and we will be doing exactly that when we visit the Jalen Rose Leadership Academy, where we will guide the students through games and tasks, as well as teach them how to facilitate for their peers. We will also be working with the Blight Busters to help clean up around the Detroit area (I don’t know much of the details yet lola).
PURPOSE: Central Michigan University is committed to preparing Michigan’s students and citizens for leadership roles in an increasingly complex and challenging society.
VISION: The Leadership Institute prepares the next generation of individuals who will act responsibly to improve the quality of life, state of the economy, and communities in which they live and work.
I think this trip will really open my eyes to things that I have never experienced before. This will be the first time I will have facilitated a group of young adults, so I am really excited to see how well it goes and how I do. Having gone on a mission trip in Kentucky before, I think I know what to expect for the service part of this trip, but then again, every place is different and has its own story to tell. Overall, I hope this trip helps me to figure out what I want to do with my life and help me realize how big of a difference just one weekend can make.
